- Description of event
Rinzin Kunsang (b. 1965), a Buddhist nun from Jelsam Village, Nyêmo County, joined Shugseb Nunnery at the age of 19. She was arrested on 17 May 1988 after participating in a peaceful demonstration in Lhasa, where she and other nuns and monks shouted pro-Tibetan slogans, including "Long Live His Holiness the Dalai Lama" and "Chinese Leave Tibet," and distributed political pamphlets. She was detained in Gutsa Detention Centre for two months without trial or legal representation and was never formally sentenced. Released on 15 July 1988, she later stated that her release was secured through the intervention of the 10th Panchen Lama. During detention, she was held in harsh conditions, including solitary confinement, deprivation of bedding and drinking water, and inadequate sanitation.
