- Description of event
Gyaltsen Choephel was one of six Tibetans tried in connection with the death of a Chinese police officer following a demonstration in Lhasa in March 1988. He was arrested along with others, including Lobsang Tenzin, who was identified as the main instigator.
On January 19, 1989, the Lhasa People’s Intermediate Court sentenced Gyaltsen Choephel to 15 years of imprisonment. His conviction was part of a broader crackdown on individuals accused of participating in anti-Chinese demonstrations.
