- Description of event
Lobsang Thokmay, also known as Bhutuk (born 1974) from Drambu Township, Gyantse County, Shigatse Prefecture, is a former monk of Drongtso Monastery. He grew up under severe restrictions, as his father, Lobsang Khetsun, also a monk, had previously been imprisoned for political activities and their family background.
In May 1996, Bhutuk and his friend Nogdup Gyaltsen (born 1973) conducted a poster campaign, distributing political leaflets and cassettes of the Dalai Lama’s speeches. Authorities traced these materials back to the two monks and arrested them through the Gyantse County Public Security Bureau. They were detained for three months before being tried in November 1996 by the Shigatse Intermediate People’s Court and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment, along with two years’ deprivation of political rights, on charges of “counter-revolutionary propaganda.” Their families were denied visitation rights.
In December 1996, Bhutuk and Nogdup were transferred to Drapchi Prison, where they continue to be held under harsh conditions.
