- Description of event
Between January and October 1983, several Tibetan girls-most of them aged between 14 and 16-were taken to Chinese military training facilities after being promised education and scholarships. Instead of receiving education, they were subjected to constant intimidation, physical abuse, sexual harassment, repeated rape, and forced abortions.
Lhakpa Chungdak was only 14 years old when she began enduring sustained sexual harassment by senior Chinese military officials, many of whom were in their sixties. On 21 January 1983, she was summoned by senior military cadres under the pretext of serving hot water. At the scene, she was drugged and sexually assaulted in succession by three elderly officials, leaving her helpless and physically paralysed. This abuse was not an isolated incident. On another occasion, she was again drugged and later regained consciousness to find herself in bed with a naked official who threatened her as she became aware of her situation.
At the age of 15, Lhakpa became pregnant as a result of rape and was immediately ordered to undergo an abortion. The procedure left her severely weakened. She was subsequently sent to a hospital to train as a nurse, while continuing to endure strict military discipline and ongoing abuse by military officials.
During her time at the hospital, Lhakpa witnessed what she described as systematic killings and extreme inhumane treatment of Tibetan patients. Tibetan patients who arrived with relatively minor conditions, including amputations, were forced to undergo unnecessary internal surgeries for illnesses they did not have and were slowly killed as a result. Many patients were reduced to extreme emaciation and eventually died after their blood was secretly extracted and transferred to Chinese patients. One such victim was Tenzin, an 18-year-old Tibetan who died under these horrific circumstances. He was deliberately and slowly killed because he was believe to possess confidential information about Chinese military personnel. Similarly Trinley a Tibetan from Lhasa who had worked at a mining operation also lost his life after his entire blood supply was covertly extracted and transferred to Chinese patients without his knowledge.
