- Description of event
Lobsang Choejor (born 1970) is a monk of Khangmar Monastery, originally from Damshung County. On 1 May 1996, he and five other monks from Khangmar Monastery staged a peaceful demonstration in the Barkhor district of Lhasa City. All six monks were immediately arrested by Chinese security forces.
The identities of the other five monks remain unknown; however, they are believed to have been released after completing their respective prison terms. Lobsang Choejor was singled out by the authorities as the alleged “ringleader” of the protest and was consequently sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.
He is currently serving his sentence at Drapchi Prison. His conviction and continued detention raise serious concerns regarding the suppression of peaceful expression and the disproportionate punishment imposed on Tibetan monks engaged in non-violent protest.
