On 10 March 1992, Phuntsok Drimed, Phuntsok Seje (born 1970), and their companions staged a peaceful demonstration in Lhasa to protest Chinese rule in Tibet. The demonstration was quickly suppressed by the authorities, and all eight monks were arrested.
Following their arrest, Phuntsok Drimed and Phuntsok Seje were each sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment. The remaining six monks received prison terms ranging from one to six years and have since been released after completing their sentences.
