- Description of event
In September 1991, Dorje Wangdu, a 33-year-old Tibetan electrician from Lhasa, was arrested by Chinese authorities and sentenced to three years of “re-education through labour” without any formal charge or trial. The punishment was based on accusations that he encouraged people to wear traditional Tibetan clothing during the Kalachakra ceremony in India, distributed blessed protection cords to monks, and possessed and copied so-called “reactionary leaflets.”
Dorje Wangdu was sent to the Rawa labour camp in Sangyip, Lhasa. Amnesty International has recognized him as a prisoner of conscience and has called for his immediate and unconditional release.
