- Description of event
Nyima Chodon assisted in the administration and operation of the Gyatso Institute for Orphans alongside her husband, Bangri Tsamtrul Rinpoche. She played an important role in maintaining the school, which served disadvantaged Tibetan children and promoted Tibetan language and cultural education.
In August 1999, she was arrested by Chinese security officials during the government crackdown on the institution. Her detention coincided with the closure of the school and the dispersal of its students, many of whom were left without access to education or adequate shelter. Her case reflects the authorities’ suppression of individuals associated with independent Tibetan social and educational initiatives.
