- Description of event
Phuntsok Yangkyi was a Tibetan nun from Michungri Nunnery in Lhasa, originally from Chudha County in Taktse District. Arrested on 3 February 1992 at the age of 18 for participating in a peaceful pro-independence demonstration in Lhasa, she was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in Drapchi Prison.
- Details of Violations Faced in Detention
While detained, she continued to express support for Tibet’s independence. On 11 February 1994, she and other nuns sang nationalist songs, for which they were severely beaten by prison guards. Her health rapidly deteriorated as a result of ill-treatment, and she was transferred to a police hospital in late May or early June 1994. Phuntsok Yangkyi died there on 4 June 1994 at the age of 20.
