- Description of event
Jangchub, a 26-year-old Tibetan teacher from Barkham County in Sichuan, was detained in February 1989 for writing and disseminating political slogans deemed “counter-revolutionary.” The slogans, written in June 1988 and later posted publicly across Ngaba County by associates, were accused of promoting separatism and undermining state unity.
Following investigation, authorities relied on handwritten materials, witness testimony, and documentary evidence to prosecute him under Article 102(2) of the Criminal Law. He was formally arrested in December 1989 and indicted in February 1990 before the Ngaba Intermediate People’s Court.
In April 1990, the court sentenced him to one year of fixed-term imprisonment. With 281 days of pre-trial detention credited, he was released early on 11 July 1990.
