- Description of event
Woeser Choekyi (b. 1966) was a nun from Shugseb Nunnery who took part in a peaceful demonstration in Barkhor, Lhasa, on 28 August 1990. Along with five other nuns, she shouted pro-Tibetan independence slogans, including calls for a “Free Tibet” and support for the Dalai Lama. She was immediately arrested by Public Security Bureau (PSB) officials and taken to a detention centre near Lhasa.
During her detention, Woeser Choekyi was subjected to harsh treatment, including repeated beatings, humiliation, and coercive interrogation. Authorities reportedly used physical violence while repeatedly questioning the nuns. As a result of her participation in the demonstration, she was imprisoned but released upon completion of her sentence.
