- Description of event
Phuntsok Youden (b. 1973), a nun from Chubsang Nunnery, was arrested in early July 1996 for participating in a peaceful demonstration at the Tsuklhakhang Temple in Lhasa City. She was detained along with three other nuns from the same nunnery—Jampel, Lobsang Choedon, and Tsenyi. The four nuns were arrested separately between 1 July and 6 July 1996 in connection with their involvement in the protest. Following their arrest, the nuns were charged by Chinese authorities for taking part in activities considered politically sensitive. Phuntsok Youden and Lobsang Choedon were each sentenced to three years’ imprisonment, while Jampel and Tsenyi received longer sentences of six years.
After sentencing, Phuntsok Youden and the other nuns were transferred to Drapchi Prison in Lhasa to serve their terms. Phuntsok Youden was later released after completing her three-year sentence.

- Description of event
Gyaltsen Choedon is a Tibetan nun who took part in the mass demonstrations that occurred in March 1988 in Tibet. Following her participation in the protest, she was arrested in April 1988 by Chinese authorities and detained for four months. During her detention, she was subjected to repeated interrogation and torture. Throughout this period, she was also denied adequate medical treatment despite the deteriorating condition of her health, which had long-term consequences.
After completing her detention, Gyaltsen Choedon was released. Due to continued fear of persecution and restrictions imposed on former political detainees, she later fled Tibet and successfully escaped to India in November 1989.

- Description of event
Ngawang Keldron, a 19-year-old Tibetan nun from Garu Nunnery near Lhasa, was arrested on 14 June 1993 along with ten other nuns. The group was accused of participating in a pro-independence demonstration advocating Tibetan independence. Reports indicate that the nuns were detained before they were able to carry out the protest.
Following her arrest, Ngawang Keldron was sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. She was reportedly detained with other Tibetan nuns who received prison sentences ranging from two to six years for similar political activities. Her case reflects the broader pattern of arrests and imprisonment of Tibetan nuns for peaceful political expression during the early 1990s.
