- Description of event
Pasang, a 31-year-old nun from a small nunnery in the Tagtse area, was arrested on 1 October 1989 for taking part in a peaceful demonstration in Lhasa. Along with five other nuns, she marched around Barkhor carrying the Tibetan national flag and distributed pro-independence leaflets. She was detained the same night and imprisoned in Lhasa Prison No. 1, where she received a seven-year prison sentence. While in custody, she reportedly endured overcrowded and unsanitary conditions, repeated torture—including beatings and electric shocks—and severe restrictions on family visits and religious practice. She was released on 10 July 1996 after serving her full sentence.
