- Description of event
Pasang Norbu, born in 1964, was a monk of Kandze Gepheling Monastery. On 20 March 1996, he and six other monks from the monastery were arrested for distributing “Free Tibet” pamphlets in front of the Public Security Bureau office in Kandze County and around Takcheda Village.
Although the authorities were aware of their activities, the arrests occurred a few days after the pamphlet distribution. Five of the monks were released after one week and allowed to return to their monastery. Pasang Norbu, however, was sentenced to six years’ imprisonment and is serving his term in Kandze Prison. Another monk involved in the case was Norbu Dradul, born in 1974.
