- Description of event
Migmar, born on 1980 in Nyethang, Chushul County, was a monk at Tashigang Monastery. At the age of 14, he was arrested by officials of the Public Security Bureau (PSB) on 31 May 1994 in the Barkhor area of Lhasa for participating in a demonstration and distributing leaflets. He was convicted by the Lhasa Intermediate People’s Court and sentenced to six years’ imprisonment.
He was initially detained at Gutsa Detention Centre, where he was subjected to interrogation under torture. Owing to his status as a juvenile, he was held at Gutsa for 11 months before being transferred to Trisam Prison, where he was subjected to forced labour for approximately three years. He was released on 30 May 1997, later escaped into exile, and arrived in Dharamsala on 15 September 1998.
