- Description of event
Lhundrup Dorjee was a Tibetan farmer from Dasher Village in Meldrogungkar County who became known for his role in a rare act of collective resistance against Chinese rule. On 30 June 1992, he joined four fellow villagers in a peaceful protest march toward Lhasa, during which they shouted pro-independence slogans and raised the banned Tibetan national flag.
Chinese Public Security Bureau officials quickly moved to suppress the protest. During his arrest, Lhundrup Dorjee was subjected to severe police violence and suffered serious injuries to his head and face. Despite the nonviolent nature of the protest, he was later tried and sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment. In addition, he was given five years of deprivation of political rights, further extending the punishment beyond his prison term.
Lhundrup Dorjee’s case exemplifies the harsh penalties imposed on ordinary Tibetans for peaceful political expression and highlights the physical abuse and long-term repression faced by those who challenge state authority.

The Dasher Farmers’ Group—Lhundrup Dorjee, Sonam Dorjee, Sonam Rinchen, Thupten Yeshi, and Kunchok Lodroe—were farmers from Dasher Village in Meldrogungkar County who carried out a rare and collective act of political defiance.
The case ended tragically for Sonam Rinchen, who died in Drapchi Prison in 2000 after being denied adequate medical treatment. His death is a documented case of death in custody and stands as a stark reminder of the severe consequences faced by Tibetans who engage in peaceful political protest.
