- Description of event
Pasang was a 21-year-old monk from Dechen Sangnak Monastery in Dechen Township, near Lhasa. Between October and December 1994, his monastery organized peaceful pro-independence demonstrations, which Chinese authorities labeled as “problematic.”
On 8 December 1994, Pasang carried out a solo protest in Barkhor, a sacred area in Lhasa, where he openly called for Tibet’s freedom. He was immediately arrested and later sentenced to five years’ imprisonment in Drapchi Prison.

- Consequences of Detention After Release
On 17 December 1997, at around 5:30 PM, Pasang’s condition critically worsened, and he died at the Tibet Autonomous Region Chide (Public Welfare) Hospital. His death is attributed to injuries sustained from torture and the systematic denial of proper medical treatment while in detention. The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy has since called for accountability for his death and for similar cases of abuse in custody.
