- Description of event
Lhakpa Tseamchoe, a 20-year-old nun from Gari Monastery in Lhasa, was imprisoned at Gutsa Prison prior to her expulsion from the monastery for her anti-Chinese activities in Lhasa and within the monastery. She was arrested on charges of posting anti-Chinese posters. They were detained at Gutsa Prison, where they were subjected to torture and forced blood extraction. A total of 7 nuns from the same monastery reportedly experienced similar treatment. In December 1989, she was one of seventeen nuns expelled from Gari Monastery for making a prayer offering in celebration of the Nobel Peace Prize being awarded to His Holiness the Dalai Lama. The nuns were expelled before Losar (the Tibetan New Year) and were never allowed to join any monastic/ religious establishment. Lhakpa Tseamchoe departed Tibet on 14 April 1990 and arrived in Dharamsala, India, on 22 May 1990.
