- Description of event
Tsering Dhondup, born in 1923 in Dege, was a Tibetan farmer who became involved in resistance activities against the advancing Chinese forces following the occupation of Tibet. In January 1960, he was arrested by the Chinese authorities for his alleged participation in efforts to oppose the Chinese military presence in the region.
After his arrest, Tsering Dhondup was detained in Dege and later convicted on political charges. He was sentenced to ten years of imprisonment, followed by an additional twelve years’ deprivation of political rights. During his incarceration, he reportedly endured severe torture and harsh prison conditions, reflecting the broader repression faced by Tibetans accused of resisting Chinese rule during that period.
Following his release from prison, Tsering Dhondup continued to live under restrictive conditions before eventually escaping into exile. In October 1989, he reached India after decades of political persecution and imprisonment.
