- Description of event
Dawa Kyizom, a 20-year-old student at Lhasa Middle School No. 1 from Lhasa Kyire, was arrested on 16 October 1990 and sentenced to three years of “re-education through labour” on charges of “counter-revolutionary propaganda.” The charges were linked to her alleged involvement in an incident in which a Tibetan flag was passed to a monk and displayed on China’s National Day.
In September 1995, facing imminent rearrest for alleged contact with Tibetans in India, she went into hiding and later fled Tibet. She arrived in Dharamsala on 11 November 1995.
