- Description of event
Legshe Ngawang was a Tibetan monk associated with Nalanda Monastery and one of the five monks involved in distributing political materials in 1995. He joined Sonam Dhondup, Tseten, and others in traveling to Thang township to circulate booklets about Tibet and promote the Tibetan national flag.
While planning the distribution, their discussion was overheard by a Chinese officer, which led to a confrontation and subsequent intervention by authorities. The following day, officials searched their residence and discovered the booklets and flag.
Legshe Ngawang was arrested along with the group and taken to Gutsa Detention Centre. He was later sentenced to six years’ imprisonment for his involvement in these activities.
