- Description of event
Lobsang Gedun (born 1968), a monk of Sa-nga Dechen Monastery, was arrested on 2 December 1994 for his role in leading a peaceful demonstration in Taktse District. During the protest, Lobsang and five fellow monks raised the Tibetan national flag, displayed posters expressing support for His Holiness the Dalai Lama, and openly called for Tibet’s independence.
Following their arrest, all six monks were taken to Gutsa Detention Centre. Authorities identified Lobsang Gedun as the principal organizer of the protest, and he was subsequently sentenced to six years’ imprisonment. He is currently serving his sentence in Drapchi Prison, while the other monks involved in the demonstration have since been released.
