- Description of event
Tsultrim Jampa, born in 1968, was among the group of six monks from Sungrabling Monastery who organised a peaceful political demonstration through posters and slogans commemorating the 1959 Tibetan Uprising.
Following the discovery of the campaign by Chinese authorities, Tsultrim Jampa was arrested and detained at Lhoka PSB Detention Centre, where he underwent repeated interrogations. He was formally charged with “counter-revolutionary propaganda” and accused of disrupting state stability through pro-independence activities.
In October 1989, he received a sentence of three years’ imprisonment and one year’ deprivation of political rights. Like the other monks, he was transferred to Drapchi Prison following sentencing.
