- Description of event
Jhangchub Dolma is a Tibetan nun from Yangchen Galo Nunnery who was arrested on 28 February 1995 for taking part in a political demonstration in Lhasa, together with her cousin Rinchen Palmo. During the arrest, both were beaten by officers of the Public Security Bureau and taken to Gutsa Detention Centre. Throughout the first two months of her five-month detention there, Jhangchub was subjected to severe beatings with electric batons and was denied all family visits. As a result of sustained abuse, she began to show serious psychological distress, which later deteriorated into severe mental illness.
In July 1995, she was transferred to Drapchi Prison, where the abuse continued. She was forced to undergo military-style drills, subjected to extreme sleep deprivation, and punished in degrading ways, including being made to stand barefoot in freezing water and run while balancing bricks. Her health rapidly declined, and she developed ulcers and kidney problems, yet she was repeatedly beaten for minor infractions.
Jhangchub Dolma took part in peaceful protests inside Drapchi Prison in 1998, which led to further torture, prolonged solitary confinement, and an additional six years added to her sentence. Despite her critical physical and mental condition, she was denied medical treatment and continues to suffer from severe, long-term health consequences.
