- Description of event
Jampa Wangtso, aged 31, is a Tibetan Buddhist nun from Gurthang Village who was arrested for her involvement in the protest movement that followed the arrest of the respected religious figure Geshe Sonam Phuntsok. As a nun, she participated in peaceful demonstrations calling for religious freedom and justice.
She was detained in mid-December 1999 during an ongoing wave of arrests carried out by the Chinese Public Security Bureau (PSB), which particularly targeted monks and nuns linked to monasteries and nunneries known for political expression. Jampa Wangtso was later sentenced to five years’ imprisonment and held at Kandze Detention Centre.

- Details of Violations Faced in Detention
Conditions in detention were extremely harsh. Like other prisoners from the Kandze protests, she reportedly endured severe torture, including beatings with sticks and rifle butts, electric shocks, abuse with pliers, and burns inflicted using electric heaters. Female detainees, especially nuns, were subjected to gender-specific humiliation and violence because of their religious identity and political beliefs. Detention frequently occurred without due process, and prisoners were subjected to prolonged solitary confinement, forced confessions, and routine physical abuse.
