- Description of event
Nyima Tsering, a 24-year-old from Taktse Sheng, Tsunmoltsal, took part in a demonstration in Lhasa in May 1993. On 14 October 1993, he was arrested by officers of the Public Security Bureau and detained for two days at the Security Bureau.
During his detention, Nyima Tsering was subjected to severe torture, including repeated beatings and electric shocks, and was pressured to identify other demonstrators. Although his release was made conditional upon naming fellow participants, he refused to cooperate. Nyima had been politically active since 1987, taking part in several protests and openly advocating Tibetan independence.
Following his release, he was placed under intense surveillance. Facing continued threats and repression, Nyima Tsering fled Tibet and arrived in India on 20 November 1993, seeking safety and freedom from persecution.
