In June 2023, former political prisoner Mr. Wangchen was detained by the Lhasa Police and subjected to torture, resulting in severe injuries to his intestines. He was scheduled to be sent to his hometown, Sershul County (Ch: Shiqu), in the Kardze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, by plane. However, airline managers refused to take him due to his health condition, prompting an urgent transfer to the military hospital near Sarah Monastery.

In 2019, a former political prisoner, Mr. Wangchen, and his friends Lobsang, Yonten, and another person performed a smoke offering and prayed for the immediate release of the 11th Panchen Lama Gendun ChoeKyi Nyima and the return of the 14th Dalai Lama to Tibet. Due to this, they were detained by the Sershul County Police. Lobsang and Yonten were detained for six months, and Mr. Wangchen was charged with inciting separatism and was sentenced to two years, being released in April 2023.
No arrest warrant had been issued for him before his detention. The individuals responsible for his arrest were members of the Lhasa Police force, dressed in police uniforms.
