- Description of event
Ngawang Tendol, a nun from Metong, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for participating in a demonstration near Norbulingka in 1990. While held at Gutsa Prison, even before any formal sentence was announced, she and other nuns were subjected to severe torture. They were forced to stand for long periods in the heat with their hands raised, facing directly toward the sun, and were later beaten in groups of three until sunset.
She was kept in solitary confinement and interrogated daily, during which she was pressured to name other political prisoners or disclose details of political activities. When she refused, she was subjected to electric shocks. This treatment continued for four weeks, after which her sentence was formally announced without any trial or due process of law. Ngawang Tendol was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment and transferred to Drapchi Prison.

In Drapchi Prison, she continued to endure repeated torture, forced labour throughout the day, rigorous military-style training, and prolonged periods of solitary confinement. She was released on 2 August 1994. Life after prison as a former political prisoner was extremely difficult, marked by constant surveillance and sudden inspections by the authorities.
