- Description of event
On 5 March 1989, Dorjee Namgyal was arrested after participating in a peaceful demonstration against the Chinese authorities in the Barkhor district of Lhasa. During the protest, he was shot at close range, sustaining severe gunshot wounds to his right hip and left shinbone. Despite his critical condition and heavy bleeding, he attempted to escape but collapsed within moments. A bystander later carried him to a hospital, where he remained in a grave condition.
On the evening of 7 March, Chinese security forces raided the hospital in search of Dorjee. At that time, he was unconscious and physically unable to be moved. Over the following weeks, officials repeatedly returned to monitor his condition, assessing whether he was sufficiently recovered to be taken into custody.
After seven weeks, Dorjee was discharged and allowed to return home. However, approximately one month later, police arrested him again in a coordinated operation and transferred him to Gutsa Prison. There, he was subjected to prolonged interrogation and severe torture, marking a continuation of the violent repression he had already endured for his participation in a non-violent protest. He was later moved to Drapchi prison, where he faced torturous ordeal.

- Details of Violations Faced in Detention
While in custody, Dorjee Namgyal was subjected to sustained and extreme torture. He was stripped naked, bound to iron window bars, and repeatedly beaten by prison guards. Electric shocks were applied to his body with such force that the metal cuff restraining him reportedly shattered. Rather than providing medical assistance, guards mocked him, falsely accusing him of possessing martial arts training and demanding that he repeat what they described derisively as a “trick.”
When Dorjee became physically incapable of responding, the abuse intensified. He was beaten again and shocked with an electric baton across his body, including his mouth and other vulnerable areas, causing him to lose control of his bodily functions. Over a period of three months, he was interrogated and tortured on a daily basis.

As a result of this prolonged abuse, Dorjee’s health deteriorated severely. He suffered repeated epileptic seizures, yet despite his worsening condition, he was kept in Drapchi Prison for an additional month. Only when he became extremely weak—unable even to go to the toilet independently—was he released into the care of his parents. From that point onward, his family was left to shoulder full responsibility for his medical treatment and associated expenses, highlighting the long-term physical and financial consequences of the torture he endured.
