- Description of event
Lobsang Yeshi was a Tibetan monk from Meldro, born in 1970, and affiliated with Gaden Monastery. He was arrested on 20 March 1992 following a peaceful demonstration near the Tsuklakhang Temple in Lhasa.
The protest involved around 250 demonstrators who carried Tibetan national flags and shouted pro-independence and anti-Chinese slogans. Chinese police forces suppressed the demonstration, beating and arresting participants, including Yeshi and other monks.
Lobsang Yeshi was detained along with fellow monks and subsequently sentenced to five years’ imprisonment. He was imprisoned in Drapchi Prison, a facility known for holding political prisoners.
